Good dental health does not only consist of the state of your teeth. Many other parts in your mouth make up the dental care routine. Gums are one of the important parts of your mouth. Taking care of your gums will make the basis of your dental hygiene. If your gums are sensitive or in a bad state, you will not be able to eat or drink properly. So take care of your gums and avoid inconvenience.

Gum Issues You Might Face

Gum diseases start when the plaque builds up along the gum line. Plaque is a sticky substance that is filled with bacteria and may build up due to a poor dental care routine. Plaque can cause gingivitis, which is the earliest sign of developing gum disease. It can cause:

  • sensitivity
  • inflammation
  • redness
  • swelling
  • bleeding

The last stage of gum disease is called periodontitis. This happens when bone and fibers surrounding your teeth are destroyed. If left untreated you might need emergency dental care. Following are signs that show you might have gum disease:

  1. Floss

Flossing should be done at least one time daily. This will help remove food residue and plaque that is not cleaned by your toothbrush. There is no better time to floss. Whenever you find the time during the day floss right away.

Regular visits to the dentist can help detect early gum disease symptoms and get them treated. Proper dental cleaning is the only way to remove tartar. If you have gingivitis or any other gum disease, regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups can help reverse it. You can buy a medicated toothpaste, floss or dental supplements from as prescribed by your dentist. 

  1. Quit smoking

Smoking is the leading cause of gum disease. Smoking weakens the immune system and also triggers gum infections. Smoking also makes it more difficult for the gums to heal after damage.

  1. Brush twice a day

This is a no-brainer. Brushing your teeth twice a day is strongly recommended for good dental health. Brushing helps remove the food particles trapped between the gums and teeth. Gently scrub your tongue too as it also harbours bacteria. Consider using a battery-powered or electric toothbrush. Change your toothbrush or toothbrush heads after every three to four months.

  1. Use fluoride toothpaste

Store shelves are lined with toothpaste brands that claim to freshen breath, reduce gingivitis and whiten teeth. Make sure to choose a toothpaste that contains fluoride as it is beneficial for teeth and gums and mostly recommended by dentists. Choose the flavour and colour according to your likeness.
